How to Roll a Blunt

A blunt–the kind filled with weed–is not something you can find at a dispensary for sale. If you know what a blunt is, then you know it involves mixing cannabis and tobacco by taking a cigarillo, blunt wrap, or tobacco leaf and filling it with cannabis. This means that to enjoy a blunt, you’ll have to roll it yourself. Luckily, we’ve put together this guide that includes all the steps for rolling a blunt, whether you’re using cigarillos, blunt wraps, or tobacco leaves. We’ll also cover some common questions about blunt rolling and explain some frequently used terms.

How To Roll A Blunt

There are different ways to roll a blunt, but the things you’ll need are basically the same. The first step to rolling any blunt is to gather the materials needed. Be sure to visit our Chicago locations, or our dispensary near Park Ridge to get cannabis and other supplies. To get started, you’ll need:

  • A cigarillo, A blunt wrap, or tobacco leaf.
  • At least 1 gram of your weed of choice. You can use more to roll a big blunt, depending on your skill.
  • A weed grinder
  • A rolling tray or another surface to roll on
  • Optional: A blunt splitter or razor blade (This is helpful in cleaning and splitting open a cigarillo)
  • Optional: a blunt tip or filter

Since there are many ways to roll a blunt, we’ll try and focus on the three most common ways, in order of difficulty, starting with the easiest way to roll a blunt: Refilling a cigarillo

How to Roll a Blunt by Refilling a Cigarillo

Refilling a cigarillo is by far one of the easiest ways to roll a blunt. It involves emptying a common cigarillo of its tobacco innards or “guts” and then filling it with cannabis. A disadvantage of rolling a blunt this way is that it usually takes a significant amount of weed to fill one up, depending on the size of the cigarillo being used. If you don’t fill the blunt with enough cannabis, it may be too loose and fall out, or the blunt may burn unevenly.

  1. For this method, you will specifically need a common cigarillo
  2. Empty the cigarillo by massaging out the tobacco. Starting from the more open end, gently roll the cigarillo back and forth toward the open end. Continue this until the cigar is empty with the shell intact.
  3. Grind your weed and remove any stems that may puncture or poke holes through the cigar. Be sure to grind enough weed to fill the cigarillo at least 90% of the way.
  4. Fill the cigar with cannabis. If you are using a filter or blunt tip, be sure to secure it to the end of the blunt with a smaller opening before starting to fill. As you add small amounts of weed to the blunt, use a pencil, chopstick, skewer, or stick to lightly pack in the weed–kind of like loading a musket.
  5. Once the Blunt is filled, it is ready to light and enjoy!
How to Roll a Blunt by Splitting a Cigarillo

This is likely the most common way to roll a blunt, especially if you already know how to roll a joint. While this rolling method may require a little more skill, it allows you to use any amount of weed of at least one gram to roll a decent blunt.

  1. For this method, you will specifically need a common cigarillo
  2. Split open the cigarillo by making a straight cut down one side of it. Here is where the optional blunt splitter or razor blade should come in handy. You can use your hands and nails to gently create a split, but the blunt splitter or razor blade should give you a much cleaner cut.
  3. Grind your weed and remove any stems that may puncture or poke holes through the cigar. While you can use any amount you’d like, try to use at least 1 gram to help your blunt be even throughout.
  4. Place the weed in the middle of the split cigar and start to roll it, similar to how a joint is rolled. It would also be a good idea to include your filter or blunt tip at this time if you are using one.
  5. Once it’s rolled, you’ll need to moisten the edge to seal it, much like a joint. However, it’s different from a joint in that it was never intended to be split and sealed in the first place. This means you’ll likely need to moisten it more than usual and hold it in place while it seals.
  6. Once sealed and dry, it’s ready to be lit to enjoy!
How to Roll a Blunt Wrap of Fronto Leaf

Rolling a blunt wrap or fronto leaf requires the most skill but also lets you roll a bigger blunt with more weed since the wrap or fronto leaf is usually bigger than a traditional cigarillo. While the instructions are more simple and straightforward, if this is your first time, you’ll likely need to practice a few times before getting it just right.

  1. For this method, you will specifically need a blunt wrap of your choosing or a raw tobacco leaf, also known as a fronto
  2. If you’re using fronto leaf, you’ll need to cut it down to your desired size and shape
  3. If you’re using a blunt wrap, it will already be ready to use for rolling out of the package.
  4. Grind your weed and remove any stems that may puncture or poke holes through the cigar. Be sure to grind enough weed to fill the cigarillo at least 90% of the way.
  5. Place the weed in the middle of the blunt wrap or fronto leaf and start to roll it, similar to how a joint is rolled. It would also be a good idea to include your filter or blunt tip at this time if you are using one.
  6. Similar to using a split cigarillo, blunt wraps and fronto leaf need extra moisture to help them seal. Be sure not to over-moisten it or else it will never dry (or take a really, really long time to). Also, be sure to hold it together as it dries to ensure it seals properly
  7. Once the blunt is dry and sealed, it is ready to light and enjoy!

If you’re looking for an alternative way to roll a joint when you don’t have any paper, try rolling a blunt. As you can see, there are many ways to roll a blunt and different things you can use to get the job done. However you decide to roll it, be prepared for a smoking experience that lasts longer and has a lot more smoke. Their sheer size and cigar-like nature help them burn for longer, making them an ideal choice for sharing with larger groups.

But be mindful that the use of blunt wraps and fronto leaves comes with the use of tobacco, so you can make the best choice for yourself and your friends. As always, enjoy and stay safe!
