What’s the Best Way to Decarb Kief?

Posted by Canna Randa on Dec 05, 2023

After smoking your cannabis flower for a couple of months, you may start to notice a buildup of kief in your grinder’s kief catcher. There are countless ways to utilize your stored-up kief, and you should, in fact, use it! Kief is highly concentrated with cannabinoids, making it more potent than the rest of the cannabis plant.

Because of its potency, kief can be used in various ways. You can incorporate it into recipes for cooking, infuse it into oils or butter, or simply sprinkle a little bit on top of a bowl or joint for an added kick.

What Does Decarbing Kief Do?

In its raw form, kief contains THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), which is not psychoactive. However, by applying heat, THCA will convert into THC in a process called “decarbing” kief. Kief decarboxylation is essential if you plan to consume your kief in a way that involves activating the cannabinoids, so here is a summary of the best way to decarb kief at home.

How to Decarb Kief

The best way to decarb kief at home is with a run-of-the-mill conventional oven.

  1. Start by preheating the oven at a low temperature to ensure that you activate the cannabinoids without burning them.
  2. Prepare the kief by spreading it evenly on any oven-safe cookware. For the best results, first try spreading the kief into a very thin layer on a piece of baking paper and wrapping it in foil.
  3. Next, begin the decarbing process by putting the baking sheet with the kief into the oven. Make sure to check on it occasionally to make sure the kief doesn't overheat or burn.
  4. After about a half hour, remove the container of kief from the oven and let it cool.

If done properly, decarbing your kief in the oven will boost your kief’s psychoactive properties and prepare it for any kind of cooking or baking.

What Temperature Do You Decarb Kief?

If you’re decarbing your kief at home, try to preheat the oven to about 250°F. Keep in mind that if the temperature is too high, you might burn your kief and ruin the entire batch. That’s why it’s better to heat your kief slowly at a low temperature. If you smell burning or see a lot of smoke coming out of the oven, consider lowering the temperature 5-10°F.

How Long Do You Decarb Kief For?

When decarbing kief in the oven, you’ll usually want to heat it for about 30-40 minutes. Removing the kief too early can ruin the batch, as it's essential to ensure that the THCA has been converted into THC. If you’re not sure how long to decarb kief for, feel free to check on it every 5 minutes or so.

During the heating process, kief sometimes changes color from a light green to a medium brown. Furthermore, the smell of decarbed kief may start to become more potent after about a half hour. These are both great indicators that the decarboxylation process has completed.

Do You Have to Decarb Kief for Brownies?

Yes. If you want to make brownies or any other cannabis-infused edibles with kief, it's necessary to decarb the kief first. One method to use kief for edibles is to decarb your kief in an oven and mix it in with butter or oil to make cannabutter or cannabis oil. You can follow our guide to make cannabis-infused butters and oils, or you can try making your own.

Remind yourself that when cooking or preparing non-smokable cannabis products, decarbing is a key step to ensure you get the full effects of the cannabinoids in your kief. But, if you're smoking or vaping your kief, the heat from the process naturally decarbs the cannabinoids, so decarbing separately may not be necessary.
