How Long Does a High Last?
Have you ever taken a look at the clock and wondered, “Do I have enough time to smoke before this social event?” Depending on the company, you may want to be sober by the time you have to meet, so it’s important to have a general understanding of how long a high lasts. Obviously there are countless factors that play into how long you will be high after smoking, but let's discuss some of the key factors that you can monitor and control.
How Long Does It Take To Get High?
Before talking about how long weed highs last, let's first discuss how long it takes to get high in the first place. Each person will feel the effects of cannabis differently, but you can expect to feel the effects within an hour, depending on which products you consume. Smoking or vaping will usually cause some sort of psychoactive reaction within a few minutes, while consuming edibles has a more delayed response time, and may take up to an hour before you feel the effects.
How Long Does THC Stay In Your System?
Similar to how long it takes to get high, the duration of a THC high can also vary based on how you consume it. Smoking flower and using vape pens are examples of methods that lead to a quicker high with a shorter duration, often only lasting a few hours. Edibles, on the other hand, take longer to kick in but can result in a more prolonged high. Depending on what you’re mixing into those brownies, you can expect your high to last for several hours or more.
Also keep in mind that smoking, vaping, and eating edibles consistently will start to affect your tolerance over time. If someone smokes a joint for the very first time, they’ll have a long, more full-bodied high than someone else who smokes the same joint regularly. Over time, smoking the same products will cause a shorter high than the first few times.
How Long Does CBD Stay In Your System?
Generally, the effects of CBD are thought to have a shorter duration compared to THC. Unlike THC, CBD doesn't produce a euphoric or intoxicating "high." Instead, CBD products are often associated with a sense of relaxation and calmness. However, similar to THC, the effects can vary depending on the dosage and method of consumption. Generally, the effects of CBD can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours.
You can experiment with oils, creams, and tinctures to find out how quickly you start to feel something and how long you’ll experience the effects of CBD. Keep in mind that consuming a lot of products at once will result in CBD staying in your system for even longer.
Changing How Long a High Lasts
While you can usually expect your high to last a couple of hours, keep in mind that there are several factors that cause you to experience a weaker or more potent high. Here is a quick list of outside factors that might influence how long a high lasts:
- Method of Consumption - Depending on whether you’re smoking, vaping, dabbing, or consuming edibles, you’ll experience a quicker or slower high as well as a longer or shorter high. Smoking weed usually causes a high rather quickly while consuming edibles will take a little more time to build up, but often last much longer.
- Strain of Weed - Different strains of weed will have different THC and CBD levels, which will ultimately affect your high.
- Tolerance - Someone that smokes cannabis more frequently will usually have a less potent high than someone who is smoking for the first time. Expect your highs to become more mild as you use the same amount of a specific product over and over.
- A Full Stomach - If you’re smoking on an empty stomach, you’ll usually start feeling the effects of your flower even faster. Having a meal before consuming cannabis can potentially slow down your body’s absorption of cannabinoids.
It's essential to note that individual reactions to smoking cannabis will always vary. If you’re unsure about how long it takes to stop being high from a specific product, make sure to plan accordingly.
